Dr. Matais Pouncil is a the first African American man to earn an Ed.D. from the University of California, Irvine and he is the inaugural Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at West Valley College in Saratoga, CA. His research has captured factors that contribute to black men and doctoral degree completion, educational persistence, and agency. Dr. Pouncil is also the former owner of Matais Books Cards and Art, the only niche bookstore of its kind in the United states. Dr. Pouncil often lectures on black culture, intra race socio cultural and socio economic class; equity and intra race topics, and the black diaspora. Dr. Pouncil lives in Oakland, CA.
